Former IDF Spokesperson Discusses the Challenges Facing Israel and the Broader Implications for the West

The prolonged conflict with Hamas, a militant organization estimated to have around 40,000 fighters, can be attributed to many factors. The difficult terrain and Hamas’s extensive underground infrastructure in densely populated Gaza have significantly extended the duration of the war. “They built a massive infrastructure underground that has been difficult and has taken time to dismantle,” says Jonathan Conricus, former spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). Israel has opted for a more cautious approach to minimize civilian casualties, which has further lengthened the conflict.

International interference has also played a significant role in how Israel has conducted its operations. External pressures have influenced military decisions, particularly regarding strategic targets like Rafah, a city in southern Gaza crucial for Hamas’s logistics. “We could have done this in a much more brutal and violent way,” Conricus explains, but international constraints and humanitarian concerns have necessitated a more measured approach.

The relationship between Israel and the United States is a mutual dependency based on shared values and strategic interests. Israel is a loyal and trustworthy ally of America, and the U.S. provides significant military support and diplomatic cover. However, U.S. interference has sometimes limited Israel’s military options. “Better communication and cooperation are needed to align our objectives,” Conricus notes, emphasizing the need for improved coordination.

International Security

The Islamic regime in Iran poses a significant threat not only to Israel but to the broader West. Iran has a “countdown clock” aiming for the annihilation of Israel by 2040, underscoring the regime’s explicit intentions. “We should take them at their word,” Conricus warns, stressing that dismissing such threats could have dire consequences. While Israel is currently the primary target, Iran’s ambitions extend beyond, potentially threatening Europe and other Western nations.

We should take them at their word...We don’t know where they are, but we should assess that they are advancing at a more rapid pace.

Iran’s nuclear program is advancing steadily, and there are many unknowns. The regime has made significant progress in uranium enrichment and is moving toward weaponization capabilities. “We don’t know where they are, but we should assess that they are advancing at a more rapid pace,” Conricus cautions. A credible military threat is essential to deter Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and Israel may have to act independently if necessary.

Support for the Iranians

Supporting the Iranian people in their quest for freedom from the oppressive regime is crucial. Concrete steps include implementing stricter economic sanctions, applying continuous military pressure, and providing tools to promote internal change. “There are many ways by which the Iranian population can be assisted,” Conricus states, advocating for a multifaceted approach to undermine the regime’s stability.

Regarding the prospects for lasting peace in the Middle East, expanding agreements like the Abraham Accords could foster greater regional cooperation. However, the existence of extremist regimes like Iran’s poses significant obstacles. “I don’t see real stability and peace and prosperity in the Middle East without that happening,” Conricus says, referring to the need for regime change in Iran.

In conclusion, the challenges facing Israel have broader implications for the West. Addressing extremist threats proactively and understanding the interconnectedness of regional and global security are essential. “Israel is defending itself in our ancestral homeland,” Conricus remarks. “While we do so, we are dealing with a very dangerous and extremist enemy that otherwise could be focusing its efforts on Europe.”
