Qatar’s extensive funding of mosques and Islamic institutions across Europe is alarming.

Radical Islam has gained traction in Europe, especially in the Balkans, where Al Jazeera, funded by Qatar, plays a central role in promoting this ideology. Qatar uses its wealth to shape European media, politics, and culture, raising concerns about foreign interference and its impact on free speech. This complicates the integration of Muslim communities in Europe, as foreign-backed ideologies may conflict with local values.

The 2022 "Qatargate" scandal involved allegations of Qatar attempting to influence EU decisions through bribes to Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The scandal erupted when €150,000 in cash linked to Qatar was found at the home of EU official Eva Kaili. Investigations revealed Qatar paid politicians to soften criticism of its human rights record and support its political interests. The scandal raised concerns about EU transparency and foreign influence, prompting calls for reform, though critics argue change has been slow.

Qatar has been describing itself as a "modern Arab country" and yet even as it positions itself as an ally of the West, behind the scenes is not what it may seem.
