Eleventh anniversary of Russia's Crimea invasion observed.
Today is the 11th anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On Feb. 26 2014, Russian forces pushed out of their naval base in Sevastopol in Crimea and set up a military checkpoint on the road between Sevastopol & Simferopol. 6000 Crimean Tatars, Ukrainians & Ukraine-supporting Russians gathered in front of the Crimean Parliament in Simferopol to block 700 pro-Russians trying to storm it, leading to clashes between groups, with police trying to separate them. The next day, Russian special forces under the GRU agent Igor Girkin (Strelkov) stormed the Crimean Parliament and forced its deputies under gunpoint to vote replace Crimean PM Mohyliov with the Russian Sergey Aksyonov and then vote for unification with Russia. Many MPs said they didn’t even vote, but the armed gunmen ‘voted for them’ In the chamber. That day, a large scale assault on Crimea by ‘little green men’ without insignia took place. The seized positions across the peninsula. It was later revealed that they were all part of the Russian Army. On February 28th, Barack Obama issued a statement saying a Russian invasion would ‘come at a cost’ for Russia
