Martins’ defense has seized on this, asserting that the federal police, de Moraes, and the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) were aware he hadn’t left the country, calling his six-month detention—until August 2024—illegal. Martin’s case is another example of judicial overreach in Brazil and another case of political persecution of people allied with former President Jair Bolsonaro.
