Note: V24 presents an in-depth series covering the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. This comprehensive series features on-the-ground interviews, bringing firsthand insights from a diverse range of voices, including politicians, professors, journalists, experts and influencers. Our guest today: Shai Reznik.

Innovating Through Crisis

Israel’s global reputation for technological innovation is often overshadowed by the country’s security challenges. In the midst of a devastating conflict with Hamas, however, the spirit of the “Startup Nation” endures. The foundation of Israel’s tech ecosystem is now being tested more than ever.

Shai Reznik, founder of HiRez.io and a leading voice in Israel’s JavaScript community, describes a scene where developers, entrepreneurs, and engineers are dedicated to creating solutions that push the boundaries of possibility. Before the current crisis, the high-tech sector in Israel, encompassing everything from cybersecurity and enterprise software to agricultural and medical technologies, was on a rapid upward trajectory. Now, the sector aims to maintain its momentum, despite the emotional and logistical strains imposed by wartime realities.

A Culture of Hutzpah and Ingenuity

The Israeli tech community’s hallmark has always been its audacity—what Israeli's call “hutzpah.” Israeli developers and entrepreneurs are renowned for their willingness to take risks, fail, and to bounce back with even stronger ideas. This fearlessness, combined with a relentless optimism, underpins the improbable success of a small nation carving out a place as a global innovation hub.

Young Israelis often emerge from mandatory military service equipped not only with technical know-how but also invaluable leadership and crisis management skills. As Reznik notes, “Even those not in tech units learn to solve problems under pressure, to adapt, and to work as a team—qualities that transfer seamlessly into the startup world.”

Forging Wealth and Opportunity

Behind the drive to build successful startups lies a deeper motivation: the belief that generating wealth leads to better education, improved healthcare, and enhanced global connections. Economic growth bolsters communities, enabling citizens to connect with peers worldwide, share knowledge, and contribute to a flourishing ecosystem of ideas.

While the quest for profit is part of the equation, Israeli innovators understand that wealth creation is also about forging a more stable, engaged, and interconnected society. According to Reznik, “Money isn’t the ultimate goal. We aim to create something bigger—an environment where people have opportunities, where they learn, and where real human connections flourish.”

The Army’s Role in Catalyzing Innovation

Israel’s high-tech prowess is often attributed to its mandatory military service. For years, elite army units have offered state-of-the-art training in engineering and cybersecurity. But it’s not just the technical skills that matter—soldiers gain leadership experience, the ability to make quick decisions under stress, and the resourcefulness needed to tackle complex challenges.

These attributes translate seamlessly into entrepreneurship. Handling critical missions at a young age instills confidence that everyday business hurdles can be overcome. As Reznik puts it, “If you’ve navigated difficult situations in service, finding a solution to a coding challenge or product issue seems trivial in comparison.”

A Path Through Turbulence

The current conflict adds an unprecedented layer of difficulty for Israel’s innovators. Many developers have left their desks to serve or volunteer, straining resources and morale. Yet, resilience prevails. Israel’s innovative core endures as founders and teams press on, seeking to maintain and eventually expand their global connections.

Facing a cascade of misinformation and rising global tensions, Israeli leaders in tech are stepping up to bridge gaps, debunk myths, and connect directly with international peers. The ambition is to ensure that the nation’s creative energy does not succumb to fear or isolation, but rather emerges stronger from the crucible of crisis.

Imagining a Better Future

The war has forced a re-evaluation of priorities. For many Israelis, the comfort and normalcy once taken for granted has receded, replaced by an acute awareness of ongoing threats and the fragile nature of progress. Nonetheless, Israel’s high-tech community remains determined to preserve what it has built and continue pushing forward.

Reznik expresses optimism rooted in historical precedents: “Israel’s entire story is an impossible startup. We’ve succeeded against all odds before. There’s no reason we can’t find solutions again. We’ll fight for a region where technology, cooperation, and mutual understanding can ultimately prevail.”
